Sarteneja Village
Sarteneja has certainly earned its name as a fishing community—over ninety percent of the mostly Mestizo residents make their livelihood from the sea. Sailboats called lighters carry up to fifteen fishermen on extended, long-distance fishing trips following the line of the reef to take advantage of seasonably available species of fish, shrimp, conch, and lobster all the way to Honduras. In line with their maritime tradition, residents hold an annual regatta at Easter. Corozal District is a haven for retirees from Europe and North America, and although it is not on the main tourist routes, it offers many activities, such as sport fishing, Maya sites, or bird-watching at Shipstern Nature Reserve.
Mexico is just a few miles north. The Quintana Roo capital city, Chetumal, has several malls, including Walmart, Sam’s Club, and McDonald’s; a busy downtown commercial shopping area; and a sprawling commercial zone anchored by the new and old markets. Museums, international airports, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs cater to the needs of any visitor seeking big-city amenities.
