Located between two small fishing villages (Chunox and Copper Bank) and one of the oldest and most important Maya ruins (Cerros), all less than 2 miles in either direction, we are also just 12 miles by boat or 22 miles by car from Chetumal, Mexico, the capital of the state of Quintana Roo. Chetumal is a bustling city with a population of nearly 200,000 in which modern-day shopping and medical facilities abound. There are two daily flights into/out of Chetumal from Mexico City, making it easily accessible to those with tight schedules. Chetumal is also just a 4 ½ hour drive to/from Cancun and Playa del Carmen (Cozumel) for those wanting a faster pace. For those wanting the same but preferring to stay in Belize, there are four 20-minute flights, or a 2-hour boat ride, every day from our neighboring town (Corozal) to the popular tourist island destination San Pedro.
In the surrounding area are some amenities like resorts, restaurants, living communities, pools, yoga classes, disc golf courses, and churches, all within a few miles from Copper Bank.
Copper Bank is a fishing village in the Corozal District of Belize. It is situated on the west bank of Laguna Seca, a shallow lagoon that empties into Chetumal Bay just northeast of the village. Access to the village is possible by road from Orange Walk, via the villages of San Estevan and Progresso. It is also possible to reach the village by a paved road from Corozal, and from the populated community of Sarteneja. The village has been suggested as the site of a lost Mayan town, Uatibal, and several artifacts have been found in the vicinity.
Corozal is a sleepy seaside town, located just south of the Río Hondo (Hondo River), which forms the border between Mexico and Belize. Set on a crystal-clear bay, Corozal was an important center on the early Mayan trading routes, and the evidence remains in the ruins of Cerros and Santa Rita and the old English Fort Barley. During the mid-1800s, the modern town was settled with a large population of refugees from Mexico’s Caste War.
Mexico is just a few miles north. The Quintana Roo capital city, Chetumal, has several malls, including Walmart, Sam’s Club, and McDonald’s; a busy downtown commercial shopping area; and a sprawling commercial zone anchored by the new and old markets. Museums, international airports, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs cater to the needs of any visitor seeking big-city amenities.

Belize’s Government
A parliamentary democracy and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, Belize is governed under a constitution established in 1981. While Belize recognizes the British monarch as its own head of state, this position and its powers are largely ceremonial. The Governor-General represents England’s Queen Elizabeth II, also recognized as the Queen of Belize, in Belize. The Belizean government is structured much like the British parliamentary system, with a legal system modeled on the common law of England. Led by the Prime Minister of Belize, who is also head of government, the parliament’s cabinet is comprised of members of the majority political party who typically hold elected seats. This cabinet exercises executive authority in Belize.
